BROOKLYN PRODUCER POCKETKNIFE ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM AS BOONLORM

HOUSE MUSIC CREATED WITH PREPARED PIANO + RAW DRUM PROGRAMMING PAYS HOMAGE TO 20TH CENTURY AVANT GARDE ON STRING FIGURES  LP

AUDIO: “Jefferson” via Soundcloud / via Noisey

String Figures is the first project from Brooklyn DJ/producer Pocketknife (Tambourine Dream, Flagrant Fowl) aka Skooby Laposky  working under his new moniker Boonlorm. It’s an eleven track album featuring “piano not piano” house music created solely with a prepared piano and raw drum programming that pays homage to Chicago, Detroit, and the 20th century avant-garde. Noisey has premiered the head-nodding album cut “Jefferson” today (also on Soundcloud here), and the album is set for release  January 28th, 2014 on Snow Dog Records and Wilde Calm.

String Figures is “screw music” in the most literal sense with direct ties to the late composer John Cage who created the first prepared piano pieces by inserting objects into the strings of a grand piano. The sound that resonates is a rich combination of tonal, atonal and percussive timbres. String Figures buzzes, vibrates, and jacks all at once.

Laposky is a Brooklyn-based sound designer, composer, DJ and producer who heads WAAVES Studio  who is is also a touring club DJ and in-demand remix artist for a variety of labels including Island, XL Records, Polydor, A&R Records and Rough Trade. Recording under the moniker Pocketknife, he has remixed artists such as Grammy-winning soul singer Adele, Brit-pop legend Paul Weller, Swedish indie darling Lykke Li and Australian pop-rock quartet The Temper Trap. His remixes and original compositions have been featured in numerous runway shows for designers such as Jason Wu, Brioni, Gemma Kahng, and Conny Groenewegen.

Laposky has also released a series of 12” records on his own Flagrant Fowl  imprint that have become cult favourites in the global DJ community, particularly his adept and inventive reworks of classic and indie folk songs from the Tambourine Dream project. This year sees the release of several projects on his new label, Wilde Calm Records, including an EP of Arthur Russell inspired songs and the long-awaited follow-up to his album Tambourine Dream.
