The Bay Area’s best psychedelic synthesizer indie-pop act Birds & Batteries have just released a new EP Unfold in advance of their upcoming LP, Stray Light. Like the darkness that comes before the light, the EP’s four energetic yet heavy tracks touch upon the struggle with love’s complexities in a hyper-connected modern age. Songwriter Mike Sempert wields his uncanny ability to meld the micro and the macro, the personal and the cosmic in this latest invention. Written at the same time as Stray Light, an album about the clarity of love, inspiration and a bright future, the songs on Unfold stand separate with their sleek, dark vibes and more synthetic textures. In a way, the EP is part of the larger story and an important part of the distillation process in the making of Stray Light standing on its own as a collection of fascinating, hard-grooving music units (songs).
