Salli Lunn - A Frame Of Reference

Remix albums are, it’s sometimes said, only as good as their source material. Since Salli Lunn’s 2010 Heresy And Rite was in all probability the best Danish post-rock album of that year, the remixers at work on the five tracks from that album which are reconfigured on this release had more than ample beginnings to loose their studio talents upon. First track “Mirror Girl” (fifth track on the Heresy… album) is taken from its nervy artpunk original and given a grindingly industrial makeover, courtesy of Scott Solter, upping the rhythms into a near overwhelming wall of electronics. Manual’s interpretation of “The Invention Of Steel” remains closer to the original track, emphasising the song melody and bringing some dubstyle effects into play, while City Of Satellites bring their characteristic ambiences to “Fast Cars, Clean Bodies”.

Two of the tracks are new work from the band. “50 Kisses” (mixed by TV Baby) is a frenetic guitar and keyboard collision that anyone already familiar with Salli Lunn might think signaled a departure from the bands PostRock sound. Final track “White Sight” has the band doing what made Heresy And Rite such a remarkable listen – an incessant bass and drum led song which breaks into an extended passage that has every aspect of the experimental approach to songwriting that makes Heresy And Rite sound so innovative in its uses of instrumentation. If you’ve yet to hear Salli Lunn, A Frame Of Reference provides an essential introduction to a band whose own sound already has many influences and elements at work within it, and is also an intriguing taster of their next full album.
