The Dead Weather – “Hang You From The Heavens”

thedeadweatherhangyoufromtheheavensForget about the impending Ice Age 3 (no, not, that Dawn of the Dinosaurs flick) or global warming due to human activity.  The (musical) forecast shows that The Dead Weather is taking over the planet (i.e., Jack White of The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, etc…, Alison Mosshart of The Kills, Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs, and Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age).

The band members performed the single “Hang You From The Heavens” on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien on June 18, 2009 and they’ve got the looks (black on black) and the hooks (sharp, short phrasing), the moves (Alison shaking like a possessed doll) and the grooves (Jack on drum and cymbal attack), are instrumentally dynamite (juddering drums, jagged guitar, growling bass line), and write wicked-cool lyrics (“I’d like to grab you by the hair – and hang you up from the heavens.”), but Alison’s vocals didn’t quite match the stark imagery of the lyrics or convey the threat of violence inherent in the song.

Alison’s vocal turn was solid, but not spectacular (Think of what Polly Jean Harvey could do on this track; hell, think of what Jack himself could do!).  It would be cool if Alison ferociously snarled ‘n’ howled out some of the lyrics or expressed herself in a deep, baleful register.

The studio version of the song is tamer, with controlled, lurching guitar riffs and thudding drums that don’t break out into aggressive fireworks at the end of the song like during the band’s live performance on The Tonight Show.  Still, Jack and company have the chops and attitude to burn, and with their distinctive pedigree and past, they will deliver, rain or shine.

New album Horehound available July 14, 2009.
