Short Takes on Four EPs

Heavy Glow - s/t

Heavy Glows/t EP, self-released

It’s impossible to love everything, no matter how die-hard of a music fan you are. Heavy Glow’s debut EP is one of those cases of “other people will like this more than I do”. Slick melodies, modern rock vocals, and that cleaned up for the ‘respectable’ bar scene sounding licks is Heavy Glow’s stock. Maybe this East-coaster just doesn’t get the sun-tinged San Diego sheen on what would normally be gritty, blues-rock. This self-titled EP is just a bit too safe for my taste, those pining away for the heyday of modern rock just might love this.

RuinGloria

RuinGloria – I’m Pretty Sure My Ex-Girlfriend is a Vampire EP, Super Happy Records

This young band from Sydney, Australia does its damnedest to combine rock, pop, metal and dance into a cohesive sound. This works quite well on the title track – the song is danceable but still has a nice rock edge. But on “Highway 69 What a Drive” the deeper metal sludge doesn’t quite jive with the vocals and attempts to mesh in lighter grooves. Final track “The Duke Remix” brings the dance-rock back to the forefront, this time with a bouncy electro bent that works well with the more pop oriented sound.

Mayda - Stereotype

Mayda - Stereotype

Mayda – Stereotype EP, Sonic Matrimony

This little South Korean-American powerhouse should definitely be getting Top 40 radio play with the likes of Lady Gaga. Mayda’s songs are absolutely pop-oriented, but she brings enough funk and soul to make Morris Day and the Time or Prince proud. Some of her songs (“Stereotype”, “Smoke”) have enough of a rock edge to easily cross over to a larger fan base. This style of music isn’t normally on my radar, but Mayda’s songs are a lot of fun. This EP was released some time ago, but deserves some attention nonetheless.

In Endeavors – You’ve Got Your Friends, I’ve Got Mine EP, Eugene Records

If you’ve been waiting for another poppy garage band to come along then In Endeavors might just be your new fave. Some of us are easily tired by yet another clone of so, so many predecessors. That’s not to say that these lads can’t play – they sound pretty tight to me – but if you’re looking for new or innovative you should be looking elsewhere. If In Endeavors was my hometown band I’d support them, but as it stands there’s plenty of other fish in the sea.
