Chris Mason – Restless

Chris Mason

Australia’s Hidden Shoal Recordings recently released the album Restless by Perth-based Chris Mason. Mason combines soft acoustic guitars with personal, poetic lyrics to produce a sound that is original and distinctive. His most recent single, “Fast and Furious”, has been receiving some airplay and the rest of the album is also remarkable.

Hidden Shoal Recordings always seems to put out solid offerings and Restless is no exception. Mason’s low-key approach and relaxed style make for easy listening, but his musical abilities and lyrical aptitude put it a step above the rest. The first track, “Tuesday Morning”, is a pensive instrumental and sets the tone for the rest of the record perfectly. Mason’s vocals, though not outstanding or particularly powerful, complement his playing seamlessly. He has managed to give the music an almost ethereal quality; the images and feelings he weaves together through his lyrics are an integral part of his sound. Other noteworthy tracks include “Underground”, “Absent Friends”, Twenty One”, and “Wait”. Chris Mason plays with calmness, even on faster tracks, like “Fast and Furious”. He manages to capture every nuance with this album and the result is absorbing. Mason’s practiced hand at the guitar displays obvious skill and this mellow music is perfectly suited to his talents.

Restless is a worthwhile new album and Chris Mason is definitely an artist to look out for. Hidden Shoal delivers another winner with this record as Mason deftly sets himself apart from a long list of singer-songwriters.
