Taking Back Sunday – Your Own Disaster
Taking Back Sunday
Your Own Disaster
We’ve got some full on, 100%, dyed-in-the-wool ultra-uber-indie right here I can tell you. As Twee as the letters T, W, E, and E put all together, the listed ingredients are fey vocals, acoustic guitars, piano, and programmed rhythm section.
They may make you happy or alternatively have you running for the hills shrilling in horror. For the latter, well I can’t help you, but if you are in the former, then Taking Back Sunday can indeed help you. This is locked-in-the-bedroom stuff for those people who wish that The Smiths would reform so they could be playing all of their songs – or just the depressing songs. No, wait, that is all of them.
There’s a bit of a surprise with the vocals about halfway through. A second vocal chimes in over the top to really turn on the emotion for the chorus. I don’t know if that was the best idea. The more subdued approach, I think, was working much better. There are plenty people who like that sweet gentle stuff – and they all own something from Sarah Records.
Taking Back Sunday doesn’t have the upbeat feel of the Smiths; things are much more subdued. But it’s a nice enough little had-a-bad-day kind of music. It’s worth a chance.
